3D Object Modeler: Salary & Duties
by Robyn Tellefsen
Think about your favorite cartoon character. Before that car, fish, or princess could sing and dance in an animated fashion, it had to be built. That's the job of a 3D modeler. Duties of a 3D object modeler
3D modeling involves developing a mathematical, wire-frame representation of a 3D object using specialized computer software like Maya or 3ds Max.
To create a model on the computer, 3D object modelers typically use one or a combination of three techniques: spline or patch modeling (best for creating hard objects with curved shapes, such as buildings, cars, and furniture); box modeling (best for creating organic models, like characters); and polymodeling (may be the most effective, precise, and advanced technique).
Where to find 3D object modeler jobs
3D object modeler jobs may be found in the areas of broadcast design; CD-ROM design; film effects, characters, and props; game design; location-based entertainment; simulations; television effects, characters, and props; and Web design.
3D object modeler jobs are available in industries beyond entertainment. The architecture, chemistry, engineering, geology, and medical fields all need experienced 3D object modelers to create models for research and development purposes.
3D object modeler programs
To become a good 3D modeler, you'll need training in industrial or mechanical design in order to understand balance, gearing, machinery, materials science, and other elements of physical engineering.
3D object modeler programs focus on 3D technical skills as well as the development of strong modeling and surfacing aesthetics. The culmination of all good 3D object modeler programs is portfolio-building projects to help you compete in the job market.
Demand for 3D object modeler jobs
Compared to other artists, multimedia artists and animators, including 3D object modelers, will see the greatest number of job openings through 2016, reports the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In fact, 3D object modeler jobs are projected to increase 26 percent through 2016, which is faster than the 16 percent growth predicted for artists overall, and much faster than the average for all occupations.
Median annual earnings of 3D object modelers were $54,550 in May 2007, not including the earnings of the self-employed.
With the proper training and talent, you'll find 3D modeling can be an exciting, rewarding career. What kinds of characters will you create?
